List design and/or fabrication jobs needed for your experiment and indicate how you foresee these needs will be met. Include estimate of hours needed for each job.
Also indicate any special materials needs. It is the responsibility of each experimental collaboration to figure out how to provide the non-standard items needed for their experiment.
(a) Mechanical:
Needed days prior to scheduled run date.
(b) Electronic:
Needed days prior to scheduled run date.
(c) Data Acquisition:
Needed days prior to scheduled run date.
(d) Vault Access:
How many days of vault access do you need before and after experiment? List the infrastructure facilities needed in the vault during these days. (e.g. - LCW, operating magnets, etc.)
List significant pieces of equipment you plan to bring with you from your home institution for the experiment.
List non-standard items that need to be controlled locally (from the vault), remotely (from the Data-U or console), or both.
Examples: HV power supplies, PCs, target motion.
Will you be using your own data acquisition electronics?
Yes
If so, what level of assistance will you need from the NSCL to support your electronics?
No
If not, will you be using a standard electronics setup?
Do you plan to bring your own data acquisition computer system hardware?
Yes, I will bring my own DAQ computer system.
No, I will not bring my own DAQ computer system.
If so, will you need IP addresses? How many? What sort of network connections are required and how many (e.g. 1 BNC, 2 10BaseT, etc.)?
Yes, I will need IP Addresses, and the following network connections:
If you are not bringing your own DAQ computer system to NSCL, will you require help from NSCL staff to set up the experiment readout and analysis software?
Yes
No
If so, please give the email address of a contact person who can describe the readout & analysis needs of the experiment:
Number of workstations needed for online analysis
Rough estimate of LTO (100GB) tapes needed
Rough estimate of disk space required (in Gigabytes)
How long after the experiment will you need access to the data acquisition system?
Normally, the Data Acquisition systems will be run in the experimental vaults and controlled from the Data-U's. If this is not suitable for your experiment, how many coaxial cables would be needed between the vault and the Data-U?
The recommended procedure for taking your data home is posted at docs.nscl.msu.edu/daq/accountclosing under the heading "Taking your data home." To facilitate this process, the following information is requested:
Person in group responsible for data backup onto LTO/DLT tape
Your proposed method to transfer data back to your home institution?
LTO/DLT tape
Network file transfer
Other:
It is the experimenter's responsibility to provide targets. Do you expect any procurement/fabrication problem?
If your experimental location and/or detector system will need any special considerations, please give details.
Hazard Assessment
Safety is the responsibility of all employees and users of NSCL facilities. See NSCL Director's Safety Statement for more information.
The following fields are required to assist you and NSCL to identify hazards and thereby decide upon the controls, standards, training, and policies appropriate for safety.
Radiation (Ionizing and Non-Ionizing) Safety and Handling
We require "sealed sources (e.g. typical calibration or check sources)
List radioactive sources to be used (isotope, required activity, whether calibrated or not), and which ones will be used from the NSCL inventory.
An inventory of calibration sources at NSCL will be mailed to users upon request.
We require "unsealed" sources (e.g. 252Cf). An inventory of calibration sources at NSCL will be mailed to NSCL users upon request.
We plan to ship or send radioactive materials. Shipping radioactive materials requires permission from both your institution and MSU.
Privately owned vehicles may not be used for transporting radioactive materials to/from NSCL. Please fill and return the Request to Ship form.
Note: Items you bring that will be exposed to beams or intense secondary radiation at NSCL must be checked by Health Physics before they leave our facility.
We will use x-ray-generating equipment
We will use microwave-generating equipment
We will use laser equipment (Class III or Class IV).
Please describe any other potential radiological hazards (e.g.: target fabricated from radioactive material; lose material, liquids, or gases that can be made radioactive) for your
proposed experiment beyond those normally associated with a NSCL experiment.
Hazardous Materials Safety and Handling
If you need hazardous chemicals and/or other hazardous materials, intend to ship or send such materials, intend to generate and dispose of hazardous
materials at NSCL, or are unsure as to the nature of your matierals, please contact the NSCL Health Physicist at grivins@nscl.msu.edu. Special oversight, handling, and/or training may be necessary.
We plan to send or ship chemicals or materials that may be considered hazardous and/or toxic
We plan to generate/dispose of chemicals or materials that may be considered hazardous at NSCL.
Mixed Waste (RCRA ) will be generated and will need disposal
Biohazardous materials will be used, or biohazardous waste will be generated and will need disposal
Please list the potentially hazardous materials (including targets), their purpose, and estimate the amount that you will ship/generate/dispose.
Compressed or Dangerous Gases
Please inform us of compressed and/or dangerous gases you may be using in your experiment. You do not have to list any gases that we routinely supply (helium, compressed air, dry nitrogen, isobutane for NSCL detectors ).
We plan to use compressed or dangerous gases in our experiment
We plan to transport or send compressed or dangerous gases for our experiment.
Please list the compressed gases, their purpose, and the amount you will need.
Electrical Safety
Please inform us of any electrical hazards that may be present during your experiment. You do not have to list any hazards that are routinely present, such as
high voltage for detectors using standard, approved connectors and connections (e.g. SHV cables and connectors). Otherwise, if you are bringing equipment with you
that requires high voltage, high currents, large amounts of stored energy (> 10 Joules), unshielded HV connections, or have potential for x-ray generation, please explain below.
Such equipment includes target biasing equipment, exposed PMTs and bases, etc.
We plan to bring or use equipment that may present an electrical hazard.
If applicable, please list the equipment and explain its purpose below.
