Faculty: Tenure track position in nuclear physics

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is seeking outstanding candidates to fill a tenure-track position in experimental nuclear physics. Applications are particularly encouraged in the new and emerging areas of research at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) that include laser-based nuclear physics, nuclear physics and astrophysics with reaccelerated rare-isotope beams, and nuclear structure physics far from stability.

Candidates must exhibit unusually high promise for excellence in both teaching and research. The successful candidate will be a member of the Department of Physics and Astronomy with a joint appointment in the NSCL, where he/she is expected to develop a strong research program. NSCL is the forefront facility in the United States for nuclear physics with rare isotope beams and is in the process of developing new research capabilities with stopped and reaccelerated beams. The existing state-of-the-art experimental equipment as well as advanced design and machining capabilities allow rapid and efficient progress from concept development to design and fabrication of new equipment. There is a tradition of frequent interaction with the nuclear theorists in the Department. In addition, MSU has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to design and establish the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB).

We expect to fill this position at the assistant or associate professor level but a higher level will be considered in an exceptional case. Applicants please send a resume, including a list of publications, and the names and addresses of at least three references to Prof. Gary Westfall, Chair of the Search Committee, National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824-1321. Consideration of applications will commence June 1, 2009 and will continue until the position is filled. MSU is committed to achieving excellence through cultural diversity. Michigan State University actively encourages applications and/or nominations of women, persons of color, veterans and persons with disabilities.
