Staff: Mechanical Engineer - superconducting linac design

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University (MSU) and its National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) are searching for an experienced individual to join our dynamic professional team. MSU has been selected by the Department of Energy to design and establish the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), a cutting-edge research facility to advance the understanding of rare nuclear isotopes. The new facility is expected to take about a decade to design and build at an estimated cost of $550 million FRIB will provide research opportunities for an international community of approximately 1000 university and laboratory scientists, postdoctoral associates, and graduate students.

MSU/FRIB is seeking a degreed Engineer to produce innovative design solutions to accomplish the conceptual requirements of the laboratory. This engineer will be expected to design physics research instrumentation and/or accelerator equipment, to estimate resource needs for their implementation, to document design solutions in written reports and to manage delivery of the design solution in a project-centric environment with defined scope, on cost and on schedule. The successful candidate will be able to maintain schedules through self motivation and participate in several projects simultaneously. This position will be responsible for supervising and directing the work of support personnel.

Required Experience:
The Mechanical Engineer must have at least five years industry experience with demonstrated experience in a project-centric environment. This position requires experience with CAD/CAE and solidworks/ansys is preferred. The position also requires excellent communication, planning, organizational and leadership skills to successfully accomplish the full range of construction project phases. Those responsibilities include completion of detailed design, preparation of major procurement packages, vendor co-ordination, assembly and installation supervision and acceptance testing.

Experience with superconducting linear accelerator design is desired. Specific accelerator design skills sought include cryogenics, vacuum, superconducting magnet and instrumentation design.

Education:
A Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.

Benefits:
MSU employees receive excellent benefits including health/dental plans, a generous retirement plan, and educational assistance. Appointment level and compensation will be commensurate with experience, demonstrated capability and the MSU salary structure.
