Staff: Mechanical Engineer - high power particle beam magnets and target equipment

The National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) and the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State University (MSU) is searching for an experienced individual to join our dynamic professional team. MSU is seeking a degreed Engineer to produce innovative design solutions to accomplish the conceptual equipment requirements of the laboratory. This engineer will be expected to design and fabricate equipment for physics research instrumentation and/or accelerator equipment. The successful candidate will be able to maintain schedules through self motivation and participate in several projects simultaneously. This position will be responsible for supervising and directing the work of support personnel.

Required Experience:
The Mechanical Engineer must have at least three years industry experience. This position requires experience with CAD/CAE and SolidWorks/ANSYS is preferred. The position also requires excellent communication, planning, organizational and leadership skills to successfully accomplish our goals. Experience with high-power particle beam magnets and target equipment is desired.

Desired Experience:
• Experience with cryogenic vessels and understanding of helium plumbing design requirements and methods. Ability to analyze pressure loading and material properties at room and cryogenic temperatures, static heat transfer with nonlinear material properties.

• An understanding of sheet metal manufacturing and production methods. Expertise in design of thermal radiation shielding using fastening and joining methods suitable for cryogenic conditions. Heat load calculations and multilayer insulation design knowledge.

• Vacuum vessel design involving analysis of pressure loading, sealing methods, fabrication, leak test verification and validation. Knowledge of vacuum and radiation compatible materials.

Education:
A Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
