Staff: Information technologist

The National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) seeks a systems and database administrator to support the computing activities of its 450+ faculty, staff, students, and visitors. The ideal candidate is a dynamic, motivated self starter who can work well in a team environment, can work on several tasks at once, and can effectively juggle a dynamically changing set of priorities.

Responsibilities:
• As part of the systems team, your job will be to help administer the network, the servers, and the application software that forms the infrastructure for NSCL computing, with an emphasis on database systems support.

• Provide administration and technical support for our Oracle-based ERP software(IFS), including monitoring, patching, upgrading, DR planning, and database tuning, as well as day-to-day administration tasks.

• Troubleshoot complex system problems, including operating systems, databases, networks, and application software.

• Consult with end-users about computing problems and issues; serve as a resource to the Laboratory for database issues.

• Assist in the design, planning, implementation, and day-to-day administration of an expanding server and network infrastructure.

• Independently plan and lead complex information systems projects.

• This position involves supporting a 24/7/365 data center.

• Duties associated with this position may include working on a video display terminal 75 percent of the time, walking, lifting, bending and stooping, carrying, pushing, and reaching.

Required Experience:
One to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience installing, configuring, patching, and providing support for Oracle, Sybase, MS-SQL or other enterprise database software. Experience installing, configuring, administering and supporting Microsoft Windows Server, Sun Solaris, and linux operating systems. Writing bash, perl, python, and/or powershell scripts for system maintenance. Managing file and database backup and recovery.

Desired Experience:
Experience supporting IP networks, including switches, routers, firewalls, and network services; administering Oracle clustering using Oracle RAC; experience writing SQL and PL/SQL, and debugging Oracle stored procedures; experience administering Apple OS-X machines.

Required Education:
Knowledge normally acquired by completing a four-year college program in computer science or computer information systems is required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

About NSCL:
MSU, located in East Lansing Michigan, is the nation’s eighth-largest university and has been selected by the US Department of Energy (DOE) to design and establish the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), a future DOE Office of Science national user facility. FRIB will take about a decade to build, cost approximately $550 million dollars and adjoins the current National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL). NSCL is funded under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. National Science Foundation and will continue its mission over the next decade.
