OHSAS policy

National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) and the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams Project (FRIB) at Michigan State University recognize and accept their duties to promote and maintain a healthy and safe work environment for their employees, users, visitors, contractors, and members of the public who may be affected by its activities in so far as is reasonably practical.

NSCL and the FRIB project have established programs to prevent work-place-related incidents that may result in injury, illness, or unintended damage to property. NSCL and the FRIB project shall comply with all relevant statutes, regulations, codes of practice and other requirements and will take appropriate steps within its authority to

• provide and maintain facilities and equipment so that they are safe and pose minimal risks to health,
• promote and maintain safe conduct of business that minimizes risks to health in relation to the use, handling, storage and transportation of articles and substances,
• provide information, instruction, training and supervision, as is necessary to enhance the health and safety of its employees at work, and to
• maintain a safe work-place and provide and maintain safe means for access and egress.

To realize these objectives NSCL and the FRIB project will make adequate resources available to promote continual Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) improvement. The NSCL OHS system was registered as compliant with the OHSAS 18001 standard on July 30, 2007. The system is being revised so that compliance will extend to the FRIB project.
